Understanding the Foundation: Plywood and Strand Board

The journey of installing a new roofing structure begins with a robust foundation, typically made from plywood or strand board. However, these materials are not inherently waterproof, necessitating the use of a waterproofing membrane. This is where roofing felt, also known as tar paper, plays a crucial role. It combines with the plywood to form an effective moisture barrier, essential for protecting the structure from water damage. The specific thickness of this moisture barrier is determined by the rainfall patterns in your area, ensuring tailored protection against the elements.

Preparing for Roof Felt Application

Before the actual application of roof felt, it’s important to install drip-edge flashing. This component bends over the roof and extends down the facing board. It’s secured using a hammer and galvanized nails, spaced one foot apart. This step is crucial as it prepares the roof for the subsequent laying of the felt, ensuring a seamless and effective installation.

Laying the Roof Felt

The process begins at the bottom corner of the roof, where the roof felt is laid out and tacked securely, aligning straight with the roof’s end. The bottom edge of the felt roll should extend over the drip edge, covering the bottom of the roof deck. It’s advisable to roll out about 10 feet of felt at a time, fastening it with staples and nails equipped with plastic washer heads. These fasteners should be placed every 4-8 inches, leaving the top portion free for the next layer.

Overlaying the second layer of felt is done 2-3 inches above the first, ensuring adequate coverage and protection. At the end of the roof, the felt is trimmed flush, and any new roll of felt is overlapped by 3-5 inches, securing both layers to the roofing structure.

Finalizing the Roof Felt Installation

The final steps involve cutting the felt around vent pipes or chimneys and securing it around these structures. The felt should also be worked over any metal flashing at the vents. The process continues up the roof, with each new layer overlapping the previous by 3-4 inches, even over the roof peak. This method is repeated on the other side of the roof, ensuring a consistent and thorough application.
